Using wool with cloth nappies

Many people are surprised to learn that wool makes an excellent alternative to the normal waterproof nappy covers, which are usually made from synthetic PUL fabric, but as long as they are properly lanolised (see our care section) wool is a fantastic alternative, especially overnight.

Wool is naturally breathable, and allows some of the dampness to evaporate from your babies nappy while being worn, meaning your baby stays drier and more comfortable than they would with a PUL wrap. This evaporation also helps to keep your babies skin cool, which, combined with the natural properties of the wool, help to keep your baby warm in winter and cool in all but the very hottest weather.

Wool is especially good overnight because it helps your baby to stay drier, and because it is so soft, but many people use wool covers during the day as well. You can either use wool on its own, or under other loose clothing. Tight clothing should be avoided as it can cause compression wicking, where liquid leaks thorough the wool under pressure.
